Since I am traveling to reach my customer’s horses, I cannot re-examine easily each and every horse at any moment.
Having an idea of the evolution of the gait of the horses I follow, is essential to understand more about the results of the treatments or to help my customers assess the state of their horses in general.

A video recording of the gait of the horse is very useful to understand if a horse is lame or sound and if he is better or worse after a given treatment.

Video recording the gait of the horses and sending the images is very simple with the modern smartphones, here some practical suggestions:

Use always the smartphone holding it horizontally. The image resulting will be wider and easier to see.

Do not hold the smartphone vertically since the video will loose definition

Follow the rules below:

  • While recording horses in a circle stay enough away from the circle in order to have a complete image of all the lounging area.

  • Do not make long videos that are more difficult to send by Whatsapp or email.

  • The person trotting the horse should run in one side of the horse, leaving a better visibility and hold the lead loose in order to allow the oscillation of the head.

  • The horse should trot slowly and any noise that can scare the horse must be avoided.

The minimum setup of images allowing a good overview of the horse locomotion must include:

  • Video recording of the horse trotting away in a straight line for at least 20 meters from the person video recording

  • Video recording of the horse trotting towards the person video recording in a straight line for at least 20 meters

  • Video recording of the horse trotting in a circle of at least 6 meters diameter in both leads (three laps per side) on the hard surface

  • Video recording of the horse trotting in a circle of at least 6 meters diameter in both leads (three laps per side) on the soft surface

In some cases a video-recording of an “Eight figure at walk” can be very useful
